1884:  

Chovevei Zion, the pioneer Russian Zionist movement, was founded at the First International Zionist Convention in Katowice, Poland led by Leon Pinsker. Formed in response to the anti-Jewish pogroms in the Russian Empire, it is considered the forerunner and foundation-builder of modern Zionism.
