The day after the United Nations voted in favor of the partition of Palestine into independent Jewish and Arab states, Arabs attacked a bus near Lod, killing 5 of its passengers, and the Jewish commercial quarter near the Old City of Jerusalem, thereby starting the Israeli War of Independence
