3830 (70 CE):

Titus and the Roman army laid siege to Jerusalem and razed its middle wall, greatly weakening its defenses. Three months later, the city was burned, its inhabitants massacred and the Temple destroyed on the 9th of Av.

1836:

Birthday of William Steinitz, Austrian and later American chess master, and the first official World Chess Champion from 1886 to 1894. One of the most dominant players in the history of the game, he was unbeaten in match play for 32 years, from 1862 to 1894.
