Fast of Asarah be-Tevet (10th of Tevet)

Tevet 10 is one of four fast-days commemorating the siege of Jerusalem and the Destruction of the First Temple mentioned by the prophet Zecharia (8:19). More recently, Tevet 10 was chosen to also serve as a "General Kaddish day" for the 6 million Jews murdered by the Nazis, many of whose day of martyrdom is unknown.

One year after Nebuchadnezzar's siege, Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah), the second of the major Prophets who had unsuccessfully entreated the Jewish people to mend their ways, purchased a field and prophesized that "Houses, fields and vineyards will yet again be bought in this land" (Jeremiah 32:15). This gave hope to generations of Jews for a return to the Holy Land -- a prophecy that has been fulfilled in modern times.
