Birthday of Michel De Montaigne, known as "the father of the essay."

The Jewish community of Newport, Rhode Island purchased a piece of land for their cemetery—the very first piece of land in the US which was owned by a Jewish congregation. The cemetery is still maintained by the Jewish community today.
